What is Discovery Rugby Charitable Trust?

There are currently 5 senior rugby clubs in Dundee, plus two Universities, all competing for a finite, relatively small and diminishing pool of players. Dundee High Rugby and Morgan RFC now are well through their amalgamation and now registered as Dundee Rugby RFC. Demands on personnel and finance are comparatively high and it is part of the aim of the Trust to promote a combined awareness of the benefits to be derived from a united approach. Funding would therefore be available for the development of Rugby across the city, to include women’s and junior rugby.

Background

The Trust has developed from an initiative in Dundee and it is envisaged that benefits provided by the Trust will be available to all engaged in Rugby in the Dundee area. It is felt that there is a wealth of untapped potential for Rugby in Dundee and an objective of the Trust is to harness and develop this potential, to make Dundee a sustainable, major force in the Scottish Game.

The formation of the Trust was intended to facilitate the attraction of funds from grant-awarding bodies, and philanthropically minded individuals, which funds would be designated for the improvement of Rugby in the Dundee area, through the provision of improved facilities and equipment and the employment of appropriately qualified personnel to deliver suitable training.

In addition, it is widely understood that Rugby offers a medium through which individuals can develop in terms of personal achievement, goal setting, team-work and social responsibility and it is an intention of the Trust that Rugby is introduced into less advantaged areas of Dundee, for the benefit of their citizens.

The purpose of the Trust is to generate and apply funds aimed at:

  • Improving the facilities of rugby clubs in the Dundee area
  • Increasing involvement in, and developing the standards of, rugby in the Dundee area
  • Using rugby and its values as a vehicle for improving the lives of the disadvantaged in the Dundee area
  • Promoting non-playing involvement in rugby, such as by volunteers, supporters, officials and former players, including wider community well-being aspects for those of all ages
  • Removing the barriers, financial and perceptual, to being involved in rugby
